It's not likely to happen again, not for a long time, but George Smith's appearance at 'The Oval' on Saturday was an experience I'll never forget. The last time I played with Smith was at Rat Park against Sydney Uni in a semi-final back in 2004. We won 36-0 that day, thanks largely to some of the dreadlocked assassin’s work. Gone is the Rastafarian hairdo, in its place is a more respectable cut and a far more mature player and man.
It's amazing to note the transformation of a quietly spoken kid who didn't realise his potential, into a leader of the highest order. The confidence of the Brumbies captain now creates an aura on the field as well. Some of the things Smith did on the field on Saturday were outrageous. With the greatest respect to the Eastwood team, who will push for a top four finish, they simply had no answer to the Manly Number Eight. It was blink and you miss it type football and the number of turnovers he effected would run into the double-digits. Further to that, his vision and skills created opportunities around the park for the other Manly players including Will Brame, Josh Gamgee and Paddy Pearce who all had brilliant games. Pearce on debut was fantastic. Scooting from the ruck, hitting hard, the 'Ginger Ninja' had big boots to fill and looks to of fitted them nicely. Gamgee went tackle mad and most of them were stingers as well. The former Aussie Sevens player has a league background and some of his shots on Saturday were pure Mungo. Physical stuff. Brame continues to excel and I can't help but think that in another era, anyone but now, Brame would be playing at a very high level of football. Feeding off the experience of playing with Smith, Will was awesome. We're now at the half-way mark of the season and in my opinion, he's the best openside in the competition. Samoan Rugby would be wise to play him in the upcoming Pacific Islands competition, his form, attitude and ability demands it. There's no rugby this week, put the feet up, take a break, you'll need it ahead of next weeks Demolition Derby at Rat Park!!!! Catch you next week.
