COLTS - Marlins too slippery for the Woodies

BY ALEX GRAVES

The Manly Marlins First grade Colts side have moved into third position in the W.McMahon Memorial Shield following a ‘gutsy’ 26-20 win over Eastwood last Saturday.

Defence was the key for the ‘baby’ Marlins, who put aside Sydney’s big wet, to defeat a tough ‘Woodies’ outfit and collect their fourth win on-the-trot.

Once in front the boys “battled and protected the lead,” Head Colts Coach Jono Harvey said.

“Our goal line defence was just phenomenal.

“There was big hit after big hit and we intimidated them with our ‘D’ which was something I was impressed with.”

The win was made even sweeter after Harvey delivered some stern words a fortnight ago.

“After I put pressure on them two weeks ago it’s been good to see that they’ve responded to the challenge.

“Were now equal third and will look to build some more momentum over the next few games.”

Harvey praised the effort of 17 year old fly-half Reece Hodge, saying his kicking game was right on the mark and his defence was outstanding.

Harvey also commended the efforts of flanker Nick Bligh and prop Jason Aho in the Marlins win.

Meanwhile in Second grade Colts, Manly was out-muscled by Eastwood.

Kurtis Leckie and Max Beer had strong games in the 12-0 loss.

While Manly’s Third grade Colts side was defeated 10-0.

Third grade Colts coach Adam McDonald praised the efforts of prop Scott White saying “he was outstanding across the park”.

With Sydney Grade Rugby taking this weekend off it offers a chance for the young Marlins to have a well-earned break.
