COLTS - Seconds halt Pirates charge
BY ALEX GRAVES
The Manly Marlins Second grade Colts side put forward a strong second half performance to out-muscle West Harbour 43-31 last Saturday.
In what has been an up-and-down season to date, the Marlins may have thought their woes were going to continue when they out played the Pirates in the first half, only to concede a late try and go into the break down 19-17.
“At half time I told the boys that they had to work in the second half if they wanted the win.
And they did!” Coach Zak Beer said.
“Not only did they work hard in defence, but they were also vocal, which is something we spoke about at the break.”
Despite their inconsistent season, Beer believes his side are a ‘genuine’ premiership threat but still have a few things that they need to improve.
“Our attack has been gradually getting there and I’ve noticed in the last few weeks our support play has picked up and we’ve started doing the 2 percenters.
“While our defence is also starting to improve as the guys play together more and more.” Beer stated.
Beer nominated five-eighth Ben Dickson as someone who stood up and controlled the game well.
While half Max Beer and lock Kurtis Leckie also received plaudits from the coach for strong games.
Beer also sent his praises to winger Josh Carolan who leads the club try scoring list with nine from as many games.
The news wasn’t as good for Manly’s other Colts sides with First grade going down 37-32.
Hit by injuries before and during the game, the men in blue were run down in the second half.
Standout players for the Marlins were Jason Aho, David Porecki and James Arnold.
While in Third grade, Manly went down in a tough encounter 19-7.
Manly was out-muscled by a bigger side who kept the ball in tight, but it wasn’t all bad for the young Marlins who lead the line break count four to nil.
Centres Jack Eades and Alex McKenzie were the Marlins best, with strong influences both in attack and defence.
Manly host Gordon on Saturday in First and Second grade Colts, while Third grade Colts face the Rats.
